ABOUT THIS PROJECT

"God has indeed inspired this book. He has not wanted to give us an abstract set of truths, unrelated to space and time."
- N.T. Wright

Flannelgraph Sessions is a series of free monthly song downloads inspired/influenced by the idea that the Bible can only really be understood when studied in the context of real space and time. I've become convinced that we can't begin to understand the things Jesus did and said without first understanding the world and culture in which He did and said them. His religious background, His geography, His lineage...these things all matter.

The goal of this project is to stir curiosity/interest in the Old Testament, in Judaism (and Christianity as a branch thereof), the land and culture of the Bible, etc.

On the 15th of every month, I upload a demo of a new song as well as an explanation of the song. Then, every six months, I release a full-production digital EP of the previous 6 months’ songs.

This is the first of those EP’s.

My sincerest thanks to God, my wife, Lacie, my family and friends. Thanks to those responsible for my newfound insatiable passion for the Old Testament: Cyndi Parker, John Sanderson, Brion Daugherty, Jack Beck, Sandra Richter, Ben Trammell, Chappell Temple and Paul Wright. Thanks to all those who have helped fund that passion (namely, the members of Lakewood United Methodist Church, Houston, TX). To my Israel friends: John, Dori, Tina, Beth, Howie, Jim, Tom and obviously Jimmy The Great. Thanks also to all those involved with these recordings: Randy Fuller, Cameron Pessarra, Andy Brannon, Wes Martin, David Davis, Andrew Seifert, Randy Holsapple, Maddie Griffin, Marshall Hooper, Moji Abiola, Michael Cooper, Zane Williams, Jason Harwell, Preston Cox, John Hatfield & Justin Tuley. A special thanks also to Jesse Anderson-Lehman. Finally, thanks to you for taking part in this project.

All the best,
Luke Brawner

Track Name: Farewell Discourse
VERSE:
In Your farewell discourse, I’ve found hope
That in Your Father’s house I’ll find a home

CHORUS:
I’ll be Your bride, oh yes
I’ll be Your bride, oh yes
I’ll be Your bride, oh yes
I’ll be Your bride, oh yes

TRACK CREDITS
Track Name: Make Love, Not War
VERSE 1:
This is the time of year
When I should not be here
But I have no one to fear
So I’ll stay

From up on my rooftop
I see something that I want
A beautiful debutante
Bring her to me

CHORUS:
I wanna make love, not war
I wanna make love, not war
I wanna make love
Not war

VERSE 2
Am I a king or not?
And what does that mean, if not
I can have everything I want
And maybe even more?

So if I want your wife
Then I’m gonna have your wife
Even if it costs your life
On the front lines of my war

CHORUS:
I wanna make love, not war
I wanna make love, not war
I wanna make love
Not war

VERSE 3:
Urijah, you had your chance
For one night of romance
But you were too self-righteous
For your own good

So how can I be to blame
In the city of my own name
Where people sing songs of my fame
For the “tens of thousands” I’ve killed?

CHORUS:
I wanna make love, not war
I wanna make love, not war
I wanna make love
Not war

TRACK CREDITS
Track Name: A Rock In A Wilderness
VERSE 1:
Can You take me by the hand?
Can You lead me down a road
Into the "promised land"
Where You swore that we would go?

CHORUS:
'Cause I'm growing weary of all the things that You've said.
You've promised milk and honey, but delivered dirty bread.
I wanna drink Your water, but from a well instead
Of a rock in a wilderness.

VERSE 2:
Won't You tell me what You know?
Won't You show me there's a plan?
'Cause I don't wanna follow
When I don't understand.

CHORUS:
And I'm growing weary of all the things that You've said.
You've promised milk and honey, but delivered dirty bread.
I wanna drink Your water, but from a well instead
Of a rock in a wilderness.

BRIDGE:
And I don't wanna follow You around
When all that You've shown me is fire and clouds
I just need a decent meal
And a god without a will
Who understands the way I feel
And ain't afraid to make deal.
A god with nothing to conceal
With gold or flesh or something real
That I can see and touch and kill.

CHORUS:
Well I'm growing weary of
All the things that I say
You promised You would feed me
And You've delivered everyday
So why would I drink water any other way?
So why would I drink water any other way?
So why would I drink water any other way
Than a rock in a wilderness?

TRACK CREDITS
Track Name: My Living Water
VERSE 1:
You give to me
Extravagantly
You meet my needs
So faithfully

PRE-CHORUS:
And I am overwhelmed
By Your grace
I am overwhelmed
By Your love
I am overwhelmed
In the face
Of Your glory, poured out for me
Of Your glory, poured out for me
Of Your glory, poured out for me

CHORUS:
Like living water
Like living water
Like living water
My living water

VERSE 2:
When I am dry
You satisfy
Spring of Life
Love's sacrifice

PRE-CHORUS:
And I am overwhelmed
By Your grace
I am overwhelmed
By Your love
I am overwhelmed
In the face
Of Your glory, poured out for me
Of Your glory, poured out for me
Of Your glory, poured out for me

CHORUS:
Like living water
Like living water
Like living water
My living water

BRIDGE:
When I am alone
You comfort me
When I am weary
You give me peace
When I am starving
You prepare a feast
When I am thirsty
You are

CHORUS:
My Living Water
My Living Water
My Living Water
My Living Water

TRACK CREDITS
Track Name: Count Me Out
VERSE 1:
Rome wasn't built in a day
But You say the world was made in under a week
When we're all dead and the will is read
You know the earth is gonna go to the meek

PRE-CHORUS:
You can count me out
Count me out
Count me out
Nobody takes from me

VERSE 2:
Well if a man slaps me across the face
You say to turn to him the other cheek as well
If he takes my coat, give him my shirt
When all I wanna give that man is Hell

PRE-CHORUS:
So You can count me out
Count me out
Count me out
Nobody takes from me

CHORUS 1:
Well I don't have to do what You do
Just to be a good man
But if You say that I do
Then I've got to tell You
I just don't understand

CHORUS 2:
Why You tell me
What You tell me
When everybody tells me
Something different

VERSE 3:
You say there's no greater love than this
A man who would lay down his life for a friend
But if we all choose death until nobody's left
Tell me what's the point of love in the end?

PRE-CHORUS:
So You can count me out
Count me out
Count me out
Nobody takes from me

CHORUS 1:
Well I don't have to do what You do
Just to be a good man
But if You say that I do
Then I've got to tell You
I just don't understand

CHORUS 2:
Why You tell me
What You tell me
When everybody tells me
Something different

Why You tell me
What You tell me
When everybody tells me
Something different

Ya something different
Something different
Everybody tells me something different

You tell me
What You tell me
But everybody tells me
Something different

TRACK CREDITS
Track Name: Stay With Me
VERSE 1:
Oh my love, your eyes like doves
Your skin so dark and so soft to touch.
Come to the door. Leave your robe on the floor,
And take my love and make it yours.

CHORUS 1:
Stay with me
My beloved, love me
And I'll make you feel lovely.
Stay with me.
Stay with me.

VERSE 2:
Oh my bride, why must you hide?
I long for you to let me inside your room
To lay you in bed, with my hand behind your head
To let your hair fall down
Like the finest of thread.

CHORUS 1:
Stay with me
My beloved, love me
And I'll make you feel lovely.
Stay with me.
Stay with me.

BRIDGE:
I wanna hear you speak.
I wanna watch you sleep.
I wanna feel you breathe.
I wanna hear you speak.
I wanna watch you sleep.
I wanna feel you breathe.
And I don't wanna leave.
I don't wanna leave.
I don't wanna leave.
I don't wanna leave.
I don't wanna leave.

CHORUS 2:
Lay with me.
My beloved, make love with me
And I'll make you feel lovely.
Lay with me.
Lay with me.
