about
"A Rock In A Wilderness" is a song about my constant "need" for things to happen in a way that makes sense to me. God is always faithful to provide for my needs (and yours), but rarely in the way I would choose. That seems to constantly reveal itself in my choosing things that are "less good" for me than what God has in mind.
I wrote this song imagining the frustration the Israelites probably felt wandering the wilderness for 40 years. Rather than wander, I imagine they'd have preferred a straight path to the place they were promised. Rather than waking up each day and having to trust that there'd be food on the ground to gather, and water to drink, I imagine they'd have preferred the security of living in a place where those things are readily available. For God's purposes though, those things simply can't compare.

lyrics
VERSE 1:
Can You take me by the hand?
Can You lead me down a road
Into the "promised land"
Where You swore that we would go?
CHORUS:
'Cause I'm growing weary of all the things that You've said.
You've promised milk and honey, but delivered dirty bread.
I wanna drink Your water, but from a well instead
Of a rock in a wilderness.
VERSE 2:
Won't You tell me what You know?
Won't You show me there's a plan?
'Cause I don't wanna follow
When I don't understand.
CHORUS:
And I'm growing weary of all the things that You've said.
You've promised milk and honey, but delivered dirty bread.
I wanna drink Your water, but from a well instead
Of a rock in a wilderness.
BRIDGE:
And I don't wanna follow You around
When all that You've shown me is fire and clouds
I just need a decent meal
And a god without a will
Who understands the way I feel
And ain't afraid to make deal.
A god with nothing to conceal
With gold or flesh or something real
That I can see and touch and kill.
CHORUS:
Well I'm growing weary of
All the things that I say
You promised You would feed me
And You've delivered everyday
So why would I drink water any other way?
So why would I drink water any other way?
So why would I drink water any other way
Than a rock in a wilderness?
